BANK South Pacific’s new branch in Yangoru, East Sepik, opened for business on Monday.
Local MP Richard Maru thanked BSP for establishing a branch in the district.
“Our people came from far to see the soft opening today (Monday),” he said.
“The branch will be officially opened on Sept 16 as part of our Independence Day festivities together with our Yangoru-Saussia school of excellence.
“We thank BSP for the confidence in investing in and putting up a branch in Yangoru to serve our people and the business community in our district and those that come from other parts of the province.
“This is a much-needed service and it’s a dawn of a new era for business in our district as we lock down details to bring in a second bank into Yangoru and have them set up operations by December so we give our people a choice.”
In a previous interview with BSP chief executive Robin Fleming, he said construction of the branch took four months.
Fleming said the branch would have five staff.
“It is contemplated that we will also upgrade Maprik this year with Angoram in the prospects for 2021,” he told The National.
Maru said the K2 million building would provide banking services that people in the district currently accessed in Wewak and Maprik.
“These are services like general banking, loans, foreign currency transactions, automated teller machines (ATMs), business banking and all other services,” he said.
Under this partnership with BSP, the Yangoru-Saussia development authority will deliver the district’s credit scheme from this branch.
