THE Lae City Authority (LCA) has backed its people’s cry for improved banking services and has called for at least one more branch to be established.
LCA chief executive Neil Ellery said Lae was growing rapidly in population and there was a demand for more services including banking.
“LCA through the Hand Up programme alone has helped open almost 500 new bank accounts in the last six weeks for community workers involved in that programme,” he said.
“I see there is a great need from bank customers for better services and at least a new branch here in Lae to cope with the demand.
“We all see the endless queues along the road outside of certain banks.
“The banks should feel empathy towards the customers, as without customers there is no profit.”
This call was also supported by Lae MP John Rosso, who said the endless queues in front of banks for people to access facilities or be served was unbecoming for the banks.
“We definitely need more service outlets which a lot of people use,” he said.
“Banks hold people’s money and people need to access bank services efficiently so banks must ensure they provide the necessary efficiency.”
Lae, currently has one Westpac commercial banking centre, serving both its corporate and retail banking clients, two BSP commercial banking centres and one corporate banking centre and one Kina Bank office.
