DEACON Peter Kopil was ordained a priest by the Mt Hagen Catholic archdiocese Archbishop Douglas Young at Banz on Saturday.
Parishioners from Banz, Fatima and other parishes in Jiwaka and Western Highlands witnessed the event.
Priests from Mt Hagen, Jiwaka, Kundiawa, Goroka, Wabag and Mendi welcomed Kopil as a priest after Young annointed him and clothed him in priestly garment.
Young said Kopil made a decision to become God’s servant in the eyes of the Catholic church.
“You have a noble duty to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to your fellow brothers and sisters, and you have to be faithful and committed to that calling,” he said.
“This is the highest calling from God to you.
“In all seasons, you have to practise this faith as God’s servant. You are called unto holiness.”
Kopil is from the Andpang tribe in Banz. He will serve at Nondugl parish.
The new priest pledged to serve God faithfully.
He thanked priests, vocation directors, parishioners, sponsors, his family and lecturers in seminaries whichg he attended in his years of studies to become a priest.
Family member Gabriel Kombuk thanked everyone who had mentored Kopil.
