LAE zone champions Bara FC are the queens of the inaugural Women National Soccer League after beating NGCB Inter University FC in a penalty shootout 4-3 at Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby.
Playing as the curtain-raiser to the men’s grand final between Hekari and the Eastern Star, the women’s final attracted a fair share of the football population in Port Moresby to turn up to watch.
Bara fielded several notable representative players such as Monica Yawas, Zeenah Limbai, Edna John Thomas, Linah Honeakii and Grace Steven while University had Jacquelyn Chalau, Tokoi Norrie, Miriam Louma, Miriam Lanta, Deslyn Siniu and goalkeeper Linda Bunaga.
The game went down to the wire but neither side could manage a goal after regulation time.
Bara goalkeeper  Fidelma Watpore had a strong game making several saves keeping her team in the match against favourites University.
Despite not getting enough rest from their travel from Lae to Port Moresby due to flight disruption, Barra showed their championship quality by keeping their composure and nerve heading into the shootout.
After the 0-0 in the regulation time, and five minutes extra time, referee Salaiau Sosogan signalled a penalty shootout.
During the first five kicks, both teams drew 3-3 until Bara’s Rose Ben tapped home her team’s fourth to break the deadlock in the sudden death shootout.
