Barawaghi Correctional Institute gets water supply

THE Barawaghi Correctional Institute in Chimbu will enjoy sufficient water supply to its prisoners’ compound and officers’ residences after missing out for years.
Chimbu Governor Michael Dua Bogai co-funded K50,000 for the piping and setting up of concrete slabs and then purchased a Southern Cross water tank from Port Moresby.
Bogai also funded K60,000 water supply for Gavale village, provided the Kup local council with a 9500-litre Warrior tank and necessary materials purchased in Lae.
Barawaghi Correctional Service commander Superintendent Michael Avirap said the institution relied on bore-water supply that catered only for prisoners’ washing but unfit for cooking and drinking.
“Some previous issues of typhoid and dysentery outbreaks at Barawaghi were caused by lack of clean water supply” Avirap said.
“Instead, we relied heavily on rain water for cooking and drinking during the wet season but during long dry periods, it was very risky,” Avirap said.
