THE Papua New Guinea Barramundis have completed two warm up matches in their quest to gain a T20 World Cup berth next year.
Their first game will be on Saturday against Bermuda so they are adjusting back into the T20 format and aclimatising to the conditions during the lead-up period.
They played their first practice match against the United Arab Emirates, claiming a 13-run win to open their campaign.
Batting first, the Barramundis made 6/160 with captain Assad Vala top-scoring with 72 (54) well supported by Sese Bau 35 (26) and Norman Vanua 15* (10) to finish the innings.
In reply, UAE could only manage 147 before being bowled out in the 19th over.
All the bowlers chipped in well with Norman Vanua, CJ Amini and Nosaina Pokana all picking up two wickets each in the victory.
The second game again saw PNG batting first, racking up a decent 3/208 off their 20 overs. Lega Siaka bounced back to form with an impressive 112 not-out off 62 balls with Vala (35) and Bau (22) contributing to the Barramundis’ score.
After having Namibia at 2/31 early, their batsmen started getting on top with Nikolaas Davin (66), Gerhard Eramus (42) and Johannes Jonathan Smit (51) seeing Namibia home on the last ball for the win. PNG coach Joe Dawes said: “We are pleased with the practice games, most of our batsmen got good time in the middle and all bowlers got overs in.
“Assad and Lega are in good touch, Sese and JB Reva have come back into the squad and we know the areas we need to improve on before Saturday. We haven’t played T20 since March so the boys are adjusting well.”
