HEBOU PNG Barramundis’ opening bowler Nosiana Pokana has been cleared to play international cricket after the latest tests conducted in Brisbane found that his bowling action is deemed to be legal.
On June 5, Pokana underwent a reassessment of his bowling action at the National Cricket Centre, Brisbane, where it was revealed that the amount of elbow extension in his bowling action was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC illegal bowling regulations.
The umpires are still at liberty to report Pokana in the future if they believe he is displaying a suspect action and not reproducing the legal action from the reassessment.
To assist the umpires, they will be provided with images and video footage of the bowler’s remodelled legal bowling action.
As per Article 6.12 of the regulations, should Pokana be reported for a second time within a two year period he will be required to submit to further testing and if his action is found to be illegal, he will be automatically suspended from bowling in international cricket for a minimum period of one year.
Pokana was reported during a One Day International between PNG and Hong Kong in Dubai on Dec 8 last year and had undergone an independent assessment of his bowling action on January 6 at the National Cricket Centre, Brisbane, where his bowling action was found to be illegal.
Pokana, from Kalo Village in Central, has been a regular member of the Barramundis since making his debut in a T20 International against Ireland in Townsville in February, 2016.
Pokana became the 114th player to play for the Barramundis and has played five ODIs and three T20Is for his country.
This decision has means that Pokana will be available for selection for the upcoming ICC World T20 EAP Qualifier “A” in Fiji next month.
