THE Hebou PNG Barramundis and the Cricket PNG (CPNG) Academy XI squads for the international series in Port Moresby starting next week were announced yesterday.
There were no surprises with the selection of the Barramundis squad, with Assad Vala once again to captain the squad.
“We have retained our core Barramundis squad for the tri-series next week at Amini Park so we can build on the momentum we have developed under coach Joe Dawes,” CPNG chairman of selectors Daniel Faunt said.
“In the absence of regular cricket over the coming month it is important we keep the group together as we look to an important 2019,” he said.
For the first time, CPNG have included an Academy XI in an international series.
The CPNG Academy side will feature in the T20 series with John Boge Reva to captain the squad.
“We are particularly pleased to provide an opportunity for our fringe players to test themselves against a quality opposition,” Faunt said.
The Academy side contains a mixture of Barramundis experience including Boge Reva and Dogodo Bau as well as up and coming youngsters such as Sema Kamea and left-arm spin bowler Willie Peterson.
“The Academy XI’s participation in the tri series is crucial in building our depth for the future and the selectors are confident of a competitive series,” Faunt said.
The T20 series starts on Monday and ends on Sunday (Oct 7) and each team will play each other twice with the top two teams playing off in the final.
The three-match 50-over series will take place straight after the T20 series between PNG and Hong Kong on Oct 9, 10 and 12.
The T20 series opener will see the CPNG Academy XI taking on Hong Kong in the morning match and then playing the PNG Barramundis in the afternoon match.
