CRICKET PNG officially announced yesterday that the Hebou PNG Barramundis would tour Hong Kong to take part in the West Pacific Cup (T20), Hong Kong Sixes and the South China Cup (50 overs) from the Oct 23 to Nov 1.
PNG won its recent home series (T20 and 50 overs) against Hong Kong in which batsmen Lega Siaka and Tony Ura as well as Norman Vanua performed well with the bat while Damien Ravu was a standout with the ball.
Siaka, hit the highest score (188 not out) by a PNG batsman in an international 50-over match on home soil while opener Ura maintained a strike rate of over 100 in both the T20s and 50-over games which included two half centuries.
“We are delighted to accept the invitation from Hong Kong Cricket to take part in the West Pacific Cup, Hong Kong Sixes and the South China Cup later this month,” CPNG CEO Greg Campbell said.
“This will be the last tour of the year for the Barramundis and we are all hoping that they finish the year off on a high.”
The West Pacific Cup will be a T20 competition featuring PNG, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Hong Kong ‘A’ and will be played from Oct 23-25.
CPNG accepted the invitation from Hong Kong Cricket to take part in the famous Hong Kong Sixes from Oct 26-28.
The Hong Kong Sixes is an annual international cricket event which started in 1992, featuring teams of six-a-side playing in a round-robin tournament with knock-out stages.
The International Cricket Council-sanctioned event will take place across three days featuring international cricket teams.
“This will be the first time that the Barramundis will feature in the famous Hong Kong Sixes. It will be a great opportunity for our boys to showcase their skills against quality international cricket nations in front of a large audience,” Campbell said.
The tour ends with the 50-over tournament, the South China Cup, featuring the Barramundis, Malaysia and hosts Hong Kong from Oct 30 to Nov 1.
The Barramundis squad for the Hong Kong tour will be named later this week. The Joe Dawes-coached squad is expected captained by Assad Vala.
