BARRICK (Niugini) Ltd is working with relevant agencies to  restore the justice initiative project in Enga’s Lagaip-Porgera district established last August.

Phase one focuses on improving policing, public safety and crime prevention.

“We are working with police to ensure they have the equipment to carry out their duties effectively and that they can help bring peace to the valley through our restoring justice initiative,” executive general manager Greg Walker said in a statement.

Lagaip-Porgera MP Nixon Mangape described it as a good initiative.

Mangape and Walker had agreed that the restoring justice initiative unit members support the district’s law and order committee in the preparation of its five-year development plan.

District law and order committee member Nickson Pakea said the initiative would allow agencies and the community to perform their duties and reduce crime.

The project is a partnership between private businesses, government and the community. It started with the police and Barrick pledging to support efforts to improve law and order and social stability in the Porgera district.

Membership has grown to include the establishment and contribution of community and business groups, and recently the local MP and the Porgera district law and order committee.
