POLICE have identified a gang of carjackers who have been targeting motorists in alleys in Gerehu to Baruni.
Their identities were exposed after they hijacked a car belonging to a woman at a roundabout near the Redsea building on Saturday.
Port Moresby station commander Inspector Max Dogme said the suspects were identified by Baruni villagers.
“Most of the suspects are known to the locals and some of them are relatives,” Dogme said.
He said the locals in Baruni were helping police “nab the suspects.”
Dogme said most carhijackings in the area were committed by the same group of men from Baruni.
“The woman’s vehicle was recovered at 3pm on Sunday at the foot of the hill in the Baruni road area,” he said.
Dogme said the woman is from Koukou village.
He is appealing to city residents to watch out for gangs who were mainly targeting vehicles to remove parts and sell to individuals or workshops.
