AFTER six rounds of action in the Motu Koita Rugby League competition, defending champions and unbeaten Baruni Eagles maintain the top spot in the men’s A grade division.
The Tatana Island Vikings, who are also undefeated, are in second spot on points differential.
MKRLA chairman Dai Boe said the Eagles and Vikings being last year’s grand finalists continued to set the benchmark.
“Both sides played in the grand final last year and they’re doing well backing up from last year,” Boe said.
“Out of all clubs I can say that they are playing quality rugby league.
“Some of their players are representatives of the Southern Confederate and that’s probably why they have that competitive edge over all other teams.”
Meanwhile, having a venue is a continuous challenge for MKRLA organisers.
All games have been played at the Sir Hubert Murray oval two which is in poor state however teams have been turning up to play.
“The odds are against us in terms of venue, we don’t have the kind funding to hire a better venue so we are just making do with what we have,” Boe said.
“We have met with the people from the National Sports Trust Limited (under the PNG Sports Foundation) to come up with a win-win situation but we still do not have enough funds to meet the costs.
“If we find a sponsor we will definitely relocate to a better venue.”
