The National, Wednesday July 8th, 2015
THE second leg of the Pacific Games basketball competition will be the cross-over matches at the Taurama Aquatic Centre today.
The men’s top six and women’s top four will compete in two pools.
Basketball competition manager Ronnie Mea clarified yesterday that the top three from pool A and B will play each other to decide the top four placing to qualify for the medal play offs.
Mea said that the women’s finals would be on Saturday and the men’s on Sunday.
The finals will be at the Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium.
He said the task was not over as teams had to win all their matches to lead in the top-six competition.
Mea said yesterday that the progressive points tally was yet to be confirmed and official announcements made on team standings.
The cross-over competition today will determine who makes it into the finals.
The strong contenders for men’s are reigning champions New Caledonia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea in Pool B; and Guam Tahiti and Samoa in Pool A.
Men’s Pool A consists Guam, Tahiti, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Kiribati.
Pool B has New Caledonia, Fiji, PNG, American Samoa and Nauru contesting.
Mea said the competition was running smoothly and he hoped to complete it on a high note at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex on Sunday.
