KEREMA Basketball Association president Aisi Aua resigned from his post last month after five years to allow for the election of new executives.
He told The National that he was elected to the role of president in 2016 and was supposed to serve a two-year term but no elections were held at the end of his term, leaving him to occupy the position until this year.
“I know my resignation leaves a gap for the Kerema Basketball Association to operate without a president but this is something that I have to do,” Aua said.
“According to the association’s by-laws and constitution, the executives’ term of office, including mine, had lapsed in 2018.
“I’m resigning to pave way for the association to elect a new president and executives to look after our competition in Gulf.
“I’m satisfied and happy because we’ve at least done something to raise the level of basketball to where it is today.
“I encourage all the basketball clubs, families and friends to continue from where we left off and I wish them all the best in the 2021 season.”
Aua thanked businessman Alex Hearo for his support while in office.
Hearo is among a handful of business houses assisting in the development of the game in the provincial capital.
Aua, who is the vice-president of the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea, said he would be assisting as a technical advisor to all associations in Gulf which included Kerema, Baimuru, Kikori and Maipenairu.
