Papua New Guinea’s Under-18 three-on-three side will attend the Asia Cup qualifier later this year.
Basketball Federation PNG executive officer Stephen Damien said this was a great opportunity for the youngsters to compete at the Asian Cup, which is one tier up from Oceania.
“If we make it to the top 15, it will reflect in our ranking in Asia and Oceania,” Damien said.
He said the Port Moresby-based players were undergoing their own training to maintain their fitness.
“This is not easy, as players are selected on merit and only the fitter and skilled members make the final squad,” Damien said.
He said the shorter format of the sport was a lot faster.
“Squad members selected from our U15 and U17 sides are likely to represent the country,” Damien said.
Damien said it was going to be a tough challenge, as most of the other countries were well versed with the shorter format.
“We are focused on developing and promoting this concept among all our affiliates throughout the country,” he said.
