THE Hoops for Health (H4H) three-on-three (3×3) basketball challenge was launched on Sunday with the 10 men’s team tipped off its opening matches at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex.
H4H is an initiative of the Basketball Federation of PNG (BFPNG) board to get its players and stakeholders back on the courts.
BFPNG executive officer Nick Daroa said although the challenge was only in Port Moresby, there were plans to roll out the format in the other centres with challenges to be organised in each towns.
“The progress of the games were very exciting with the men’s team attending, however, the games for the women and the mixed teams did not eventuate due to issues in fielding full teams,” Daroa said.
The men’s teams that played on Sunday night were Legacy Kings, Gaire, Falcons, Ballerholics, Gems group, Kaugere, RTA Tamaraws, Kuti Vibes, Wizards and Sultan.
“Eventual winners for the evening (Sunday) were Sultan, led all out by the Muri brothers, Apia, Purari, Obert and Cornelius defeating Wizards, led by the Sere brothers, Jordan, Steven and Lammy hitting 21 points to 14 in 8 minutes.”
The 3×3 challenge for Port Moresby will continue for the next three Sundays from 5pm to 9pm.
According to Daroa, winners will receive prize money and runner ups will be given consolation prizes.
Daroa thanked the team sponsors, players and basketball fans who turned up at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex on Sunday night for the opening match.
