THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea remains upbeat about reaching its target of 12 schools this year after the resumption of its Hoops for Health programme in Port Moresby last month.
Federation executive officer Nick Daroa told The National that the resumption would lead up to a jamboree and the junior championships scheduled for December.
“We aim to cover 12 schools and four provinces by end of this year but that will depend on the situation in the country,” he said.
“We have 10 schools to cover in the remaining 14 weeks of the year.
“While we work on the skills and drills aspect of the sport, we also emphasise on healthy living, hygiene and good behaviour.
“We also have a jamboree planned for Dec 10-13 at the National Sports Institute in Goroka, which will be for the Under-15s.
“There are also going to be the national championships for the U17s and seniors in Lae.
The jamboree in December follows the announcement from FIBA Oceania to cancel the under-15 regional championships in Port Moresby this year, with the federation now preparing for next year’s Melanesian Cup in Fiji.
