POLICE in the National Capital District have thanked the capital city residents for keeping the peace and observing the law.
It follows extra police attention on the maintenance of law and order in NCD because of the political stand-off between the Peter O’Neill and Sir Michael Somare factions.
Superintendent operations Andy Bawa told a crowd who gathered at Waigani beside the National Archives that their peaceful response to the political crisis showed that they were responsible and law-abiding citizens.
Bawa thanked the people for showing restraint in the face of the political upheaval saying they were setting an example to the feuding leaders.
He assured the people that the police would continue to perform their constitutional duty to protect and serve the people.
“Mipla ol police istap wantaim yupla lo displa taim blong hevi (We the police are with you at this troubling times),” Bawa said.
He warned those thinking of engaging in illegal activities on the pretext of showing frustration over the political crisis to forget about it.
“Larim ol leaders solvim problem blo ol. Ol yet startim na ol bai pinisim (let the leaders solve the problems they have created).”
Bawa advised the political leaders to seek divine wisdom in
resolving whatever differences they might have.
He said police would not stop people from gathering and showing their stand on the issue. But he warned them to let police know in advance of their plans so that the activities were done within the confines of the law.
