Be considerate with B’ville independence

Letters

PRIME Minister James Marape says that the rest of the country will have a say whether to let Bougainville go or not.
Does he want the nation to conduct a separate referendum on this?
If that is so, then he will be misleading the nation.
The Papua New Guinean MPs are already the mouthpieces of the people of PNG and through them Papua New Guineans can determine whether to let Bougainville secede from PNG.
There is no need to call for a nationwide referendum for PNG to determine Bougainville’s future political status.
This will only defeat the Bougainville Peace Agreement and frustrate the peace process.
Marape should understand that he is dealing with a group of people (Bougainvilleans) who still have unhealed wounds.

  • Pau Piahe made a statement and I totally agree with his last statement. Back then at the height of the conflict I was officer on a ship from Rabaul berthed at Kieta wharf. People were rushing to board the ships where on the hilltops sporadic gunfire persisted. Sadly MV COSMARIS wreck lies at Kieta wharf, a memory of the conflict burnt down by fragmented elements of BRA. They did not have a command structure and reported to no one.
Orders were given for all non Bougainvilleans to leave so on that fateful day everyone running in all directions and I witnessed brutal attacks on anybody including Bougainvilleans outside PNG Ports facility. Wounds have healed but scars still remain. Enjoy your independence and please remember us, we were there in times of need.
