MANY Papua New Guineans tend to have an attitude problem when it comes to punctuality, according to Central Governor Kila Haoda.

He said young people must develop a sense of urgency and be time-conscious.

“Learn to be confident, responsible and be on time because nobody will make things happen for you. It is you yourself,” Haoda said.

“I see many of you walking in, hands at the back, heads down and mumbling to the floor while scratching your heads when asked questions.

“As students you have to be proud to represent your families, province and country.”

He was speaking to the first batch of 20 students to study in Malaysia. Haoda made the remarks after some of the students turned up late for the award ceremony he hosted in Port Moresby.

“As the pioneer batch of Central students to study in Malaysia, there is a lot of expectation placed on you.”

Developer of Ilimo’s Central satellite town Iris Niugini Ltd is partly funding the scholarship for the next ten years.

Chief executive officer Mok Chee Hoong said the scholarship programme provided them a chance to become future leaders.

“Not many Papua New Guineans have the chance to fly overseas. Take this chance and don’t give it away. Be good ambassadors and stand tall and believe in yourself. Be confident.”
