Beche-de-mer trade

Letters

I refer to the sea cucumber/beche-de-mer fishery workshop advertised last month.
Coming from a sea cucumber (beche-de-mer) maritime ward, I have some suggestions to help lift the quality, control the harvesting of undersized sea cucumbers and prevent overfishing.
While the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) training is good, the targeted audience and the nominated venues were wrong.
The way forward is to improve the quality of the product and minimise the harvesting of undersized sea cucumbers.
The focus should start from the ward and go right up to the export stage.
The training and awareness programmes should be done at sea cucumber maritime wards and the targeted audience should be the actual harvesters.
The training should be done by TOT (nominated buyers) and the trainees should return to their respective areas to train others who fish.
The internal buying system should be regulated by NFA for the benefit of the resource owners because the resource owners have been poorly paid for their beche-de-mer.
Finally, NFA (monitoring, control surveillance business division) should ensure that exporters are not indirectly or directly involved in the acquiring of sea cucumber (beche-de-mer) through dubious means.
Corruption is a major concern because it can lead to the people who own the resources being deprived of it by unscrupulous traders.
