Betel nut ban should stay

Letters

THE ban on betel nuts in Port Moresby should be maintained after Apec because we are already seeing
a cleaner Port Moresby city, a reduction in petty crimes around markets and bus stop, mothers and daughters moving freely and visitors enjoying the sites.
Despite the ban being in place, people are still resorting to illegal ways to sell betel nuts.
The offenders are let off easily and because of that they find other ways to evade the law. What is needed is a penalty system that acts as a deterrent. It is not fair on taxpayers, especially those who do not chew or sell betel nuts, to see a city bylaw not being properly enforced.
People’s attitude needs to be changed by enforcing the law.
Let’s keep Port Moresby clean.
