YOUNG Bethina Peter from Western Highlands is all smiles after a successful surgery at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital to remove a life-threatening growth between her eyes .
Peter travelled to Australia early this month  with her mother Maglyna Peter under the Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children  programme. It had been co-ordinated in PNG by the Rotary Club of Boroko since 1994.
It was responsible for the first successful separation of PNG’s co-joint Bosin twins Eaustina and Eaustochia  from Buka, now 15 years old.
“Peter  is just one of 12 cases  we have been lucky enough to get into the programme this year. She was referred to us by her doctor in Hagen, Ben Yapo,” PNG ROMAC co-ordinator and past deputy governor Dave Conn said.
“This is a wonderful Xmas present for Peter and her family as she will now lead a normal life after being treated by the world-class surgeons at Westmead.
“PNG kids are tough. She amazed doctors by how quickly she recovered and moving around.
“We take cases where we can help provide life-saving or dignity-enhancing treatment. And only cases where the doctors here do not have the facilities to do the job.”
