PREPARING young athletes for the 2015 Pacific Games and other future tournaments is the motive behind Team New Ireland’s participation at the 4th PNG Games which began yesterday.
The team, made up of 355 athletes, mostly high school students, will be out to compete against their rivals from other provinces.
They will compete in 15 sports.
Team New Ireland officials said it was their first time to send a large contingent to the games.
They commended the New Ireland provincial government and Kavieng Open MP Martin Aini for supporting them and making it possible to attend the games in the National Capital District.
The young athletes from bilas peles are not out at the games to expose themselves.
However, they are keen to do something extraordinary – to win medals.
The youthful bodybuilding squad comprises nine bodybuilders with three women – Jaylinda Berry, Josepha Tambari, Eludia Mara – and their male counterparts Joe Leskau (65kg), Pakalis Tote (75kg), Patrick Tabutabu (jnr), Ben Steven (novice) and Jonathan Towarkia.
Team manager Jimmy Peter told The National yesterday that this was the first time for the members of the squad to take part in such a competition.
“It will be a baptism of fire for all the members in the bodybuilding arena,” he said.
