PAPUA New Guinea’s bilum wear showing the national colours worn by a member of the PNG contingent became an instant attraction at Henderson International Airport in Honiara, Solomon Islands, as the PNG contingent for the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts arrived last Thursday.
Fiona Yakam, who wore the dress, was the centre of attraction as locals took turns to have photo shots with her.
Yakam was one of the 130-strong PNG delegation who arrived for the festival.
She said she was happy to show off her dress.
“In PNG many people admired this dress.
“And here I’m the only member in this contingent who wore the dress to attend the festival,” she said.
She said it took her a month to make the dress.
Yakam said she was happy to wear the dress to any event during the festival.
“I’m pleased to see the Solomon Islands women admiring my dress on arrival,” she said.
