SP Hunters centre Jokadi Bire has been ruled out for the remainder of the Queensland Intrust Super Cup season as he recovers from heart surgery, according to the club.
The Chimbu native was diagnosed with a serious heart problem and underwent urgent, life-saving surgery last month.
The Lae Tiger was discharged from Gold Coast University Hospital last week, more than a month after being admitted there.
Bire was admitted to the hospital on June 15 after falling ill at the start of a weights session with the Hunters.
“Jokadi was quickly diagnosed with a serious heart problem that would require urgent, life- saving surgery,” the Hunters said.
“Surgery was performed on the evening of June 15 by a specialist team.
“The operation lasted for about nine hours.
“Jokadi spent several days in an induced coma before being transferred to the cardiac rehabilitation ward at the hospital.
“Jokadi was grateful for the many messages of goodwill that were sent by Hunters supporters and for the constant support of his Hunters teammates.
“Jokadi is expected to return to good health but he still faces a significant path to recovery.
“He will not play for the Hunters this season while he continues his recovery.”
Bire and the Hunters thanked the doctors and nurses who took care of the talented centre for the last five weeks in hospital.
“Their care and their commitment were remarkable. The medical specialists have been pleased with Jokadi’s progress,” the Hunters said. “We are delighted to have him back within the Hunters playing group.
“He is a very popular member of our squad and we will continue to support Jokadi with his recovery on the Gold Coast.
“Jokadi continues to ask for privacy in his recovery. The Hunters support Jokadi in that wish.”
