BISHOP of the Lae Catholic Diocese Rozario Menezes visited Menyamya, Morobe, last weekend.
Menezes urged the people of Menyamya to pray and prepare themselves to celebrate this year’ 2019 World Mission Sunday and to reach out and help those in need.
He told the Menyamya community it was an occasion for them to show love and solidarity to their families and faith.
Menezes said that there were dangers in understanding the essence of Christian baptism and urged the people not to lose sight of the purpose of their mission.
“The danger is that we can begin to celebrate our Christian life, rather than be like Jesus,” he said.
“Let us not forget that God adopts us through baptism.
“Rather than remaining new and enjoying our new life in Christ, let us remember that we should become Christ-like.
“Thus, Christian baptism, which does not begin with us, should not end with us.”
Menezes said the visit was also a time for locals to reflect on some of the points highlighted under this year’s World Mission Sunday theme: “Baptised and sent”.
“Christian mission isn’t the Christian, but the Christ,” he said.
“If our Christian mission doesn’t flow from and toward the worship of the Incarnate One, we’re really just running around without going anywhere.”
