The 2016 edition of the Black Orchids Sevens will be staged this weekend (July 2-3) in Arawa, Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
From humble beginnings in 2005, the Black Orchids 7s has grown over the past decade in size and national importance, to become one of the country’s premier sevens tournaments.
This was further highlighted by the K20,000 sponsorship from SP Brewery.
With total prize pool of K100 000 up for grabs, this year’s tourney has not only attracted teams from the traditional rugby powerhouses of Port Moresby and Lae, but also teams from, Alotau, Madang, Rabaul, Kimbe, Lihir and even the Solomon Islands. Teams from AROB will make up the bulk of participants.
A total of 24 teams will be taking part in this year’s tournament. For the first time in the tournament’s history a women’s division will be included in the competition, further highlighting the importance of the Black Orchids 7s on rugby’s national calendar of events in 2016. The growth of the Black Orchids 7s has shown that the code has the potential for growth outside of the traditional strongholds.
With AROB’s very own Black Orchid  team becoming more competitive, challenging and beating teams from the established rugby centres.
