MORESBY South Blacks ground out a 26-12 win over Buria Reds in round three of the Southern Super League National Gaming Control Board Cup on Sunday.
The win was the sort of defence that helped Blacks spring a 20-6 upset win over Laumas last time out.
But the win did not come easy as Blacks were made to work for it with their Hiri West opposition producing free-flowing rugby league to trouble the hosts.
Blacks hooker Gordon Negi was named as the man of the match for his direction in attack which helped the side score six tries and kick two conversions.
Midway through the second half, the home side had a scare when Reds forced an 18-12 scoreline but solid defence by the Blacks proved crucial.
The Blacks pack in captain Joe Omaro, Johnny Ephraim, Brandon Somavi and Benny Yol dominated Reds who were valiant in defeat.
Negi combined well with halfback Andy Tand and No.6 Ishmael Aima as they provided early ball to centres Frazer Anderson and Terence Wemin.
Reds forwards Rausi Dikana, Tegana Apa, Maino Kari, Morea Delena and Vanua Valavu tried desperately to match Blacks but they were unable to punch holes in attack.
Negi opened the scoring when he scored between the uprights and converted his own try for a 6-0 lead before fullback Junior Hoki extended the scoreline to 10-0.
But Reds hit back with a converted try to trail 6-10 at halftime.
