PNG SP Hunters captain and PNG Kumuls vice-captain Ase Boas described the late Kato Ottio as a rugby league icon, a pillar and example for others to follow.
During Ottio’s funeral service at the Sir John Guise Stadium indoor complex last Friday, Boas said he had shared many good memories since 2015 with Ottio who was Hunter No.29 and Kumul No.269.
“We always say once a Hunter always a Hunter, Kumul to the core, and that will be our legacy,” Boas said.
“We joined the Hunters together in 2015 and that’s how I got to know him.”
Standing at the podium with Ottio’s casket in front of him, Boas said he was speaking on behalf of his Hunters teammates who were Ottio’s true brothers in rugby league.
He said he was standing up and paying his respects to a hero.
Boas said Ottio’s legacy would always remain in the years to come.
“Me and all your brothers (team mates) will greatly miss you but part of you will always live in us.
“We will carry your legacy wherever we go.
“Wherever we go and play, we will embrace your legacy.
“Kato joined the Hunters in 2015 and I have known him as a man of humble character.
“He was the only patient player among us who always listens to the trainers and team management.
“Through his character, he won respect and favour at the highest level of rugby league.
“He was a truly a blessed young man we are deeply saddened that he left us too soon.”
