THE body of a man and that of his daughter have been found after they were swept away by floodwaters at Yamayo on March 2.
However, police may launch a murder investigation because of the head wounds found on the pair.
Henry Kia, 60, a former warder, and his daughter Regina Kia Getio, 37, from Yamiufa village, were carried away by floodwaters at 8pm and recovered the following day.
Lower Asaro local level government ward two councillor Aviyo Teninge said Kia was returning home from a gathering in neighbouring
Kofena when he fell off the Yamayo Bridge into the river.
“He called out to his daughter for help. Kia Getio’s house is about 30 metres from the bridge but she heard him and ran out to try and help her father,” Teninge said.
“She was also swept away by the floodwaters,” he said. The bodies were found at about 10am in Akisaroka Village, Asaro.
Teninge said both father and daughter had deep head wounds, indicating that “they may have been attacked before being thrown into the river”.
Asaro police detective Sr Const David Nuke said “we are investigating the deaths and are waiting for the post mortem reports to establish the duo’s cause of death”.
“The post mortem report is expected this week and we will proceed with investigations if need be,” he said, adding the deaths remain suspicious and the post mortem will determine if police should investigate further.
