THE National Capital District BodyBuilding Association is gearing up for its national championships from May 9-10 in Goroka.

NCDBBA president Canny Cooper was confident his team could win a swag of medals saying preparations were on target.

Cooper said the aim was to earn selection for the 2015 Pacific Games training squad.

He said former Mr PNGs Lucas Wemin (2009) and Imbak Wiape (2008), Iso Finch and veteran Jack Viyufa were all strong contenders to win the overall title.

Cooper also welcomed Australian bodybuilder Ian Wichman to the team saying the experienced Aussie was sure to pass on valuable information and tips  to his athletes.

Wichman is assisting Viyufa and Cooper to get the team ready.

Wichman will compete in the 85 kilogram division.

The 38-year-old is attached to the Australian Federal Police and based in Port Moresby.

Team NCD: Wiape, Finch, Joe Kulame, Steven Simon (65kg), Canny Cooper, Lucas Wemin (70kg) Vincent Nafe (75kg), Martin Haga (80kg), Ian Wichman (85kg), Johnny Glen (90kg), Alex Yoba, Konia Ginua (novice) and Jenny Joel (women).

Cooper appealed to NCD Governor Powes Parkop, Health and HIV & Aids Minister Michael Malabag, Minister for Sports and Pacific Games Justin Tkatchenko and Moresby North East MP Labi Amaiu for support as most of the team members were unemployed.

He said the trip to Goroka would cost the team K30,000 covering air fares, accommodation, meals and transport.
