BODYBUILDERS will have a chance to compete at the national championships in June which will pave the way for the top physiques to represent the country at two international events.
The Papua New Guinea Bodybuilding Federation released its 2019 calendar with an eye to the 8th PNG Games in Mendi, Southern Highlands, next year.
PNGBBF president Steve Bomal, pictured, said it was important for bodybuilders to get into shape for the local tournaments.
“We are pleased to release our 2019 events calendar highlighting upcoming events, especially the three major ones that we are committed to,” Bomal said.
“Last year was not good for us, we didn’t take our athletes to the South Pacific Bodybuilding Championships and World Championships in Thailand because of a lack of funding but we managed to successfully host the 27th National Championships in Port Moresby last June.
“We also apologise for that,” the 59-year-old said.
“This year we will try our best to host the 28th national championships.
“After the nationals we will pick the best bodybuilders and put them in our national squad and they’ll have access to gym facilities and other services at the High Performance Centre in Port Moresby.”
Bomal said his executives were determined to take the team to the South Pacific championships and world titles.
Bodybuilding tournaments: June — national championships in Kundiawa, Simbu; Oct 23-27 — South Pacific Championships in Noumea, New Caledonia; Nov 19-24 — World Championships in South Korea. The PNGBBF was a member of PNG Olympic Committee and PNG Sport Foundation and affiliated to South Pacific Bodybuilding Federation and member to the World Bodybuilding Federation.
“Our participating provinces include NCD, Eastern Highlands (Goroka), Simbu, Bougainville, West New Britain (Kimbe), East New Britain, Morobe (Lae), Jiwaka, Southern Highlands (Kutubu) and we hope to see more talent at next year’s PNG Games.”
Bomal thanked their sponsors who helped them host the national championships.
“We’re grateful to the Cosmopolitan Club, Hotel Laguna, Trophy Haus, National Airport Corporations, Department of Community, Religion and Youth and their Secretary Anna Solomon and the PNG Sports Foundation.
“We’re looking forward to having their support again this year.”
“Last year we had an agreement with Department of Community, Religion and Youth to promote their anti-violence theme and we would like continue that this year especially at our national championships in Simbu,” Bomal said.
“We also invite businesses houses to support these events.”
