LEADERS must draw a clear line between what is public property and what is for their private use, a statesman says.

Sir Nagora Bogan, the University of Technology Chancellor, said that last Saturday at the fundraising dinner of the Christian Democratic Party.

“You must know the difference between what is of public interest and what is of private interest,” Sir Nagora said.

“I have seen many young leaders using public things as their private properties.

“If you know the difference, you will get through life because you will be able to draw a line between private and public.”

Sir Nagora said leaders made big mistakes when they are in authority and cheat the system by pocketing people’s things and get away with it.

“Leadership is the pinnacle of everything,” he said.

“History is full of leaders. Leadership is not something you are born with. It is a skill you develop and grow with.

“You don’t need to pretend to be somebody else.

“Whoever you are internally, must reconcile with you externally.

“If you are honest to yourself, you will be honest to other people around you.

“It’s the small things that you do that counts.

“If you tell somebody that you’ll be there at 8.30, be there.

“Leadership is about credibility. If you have a good sense of right and wrong, then you will have to make wise decisions in your leadership.”

Sir Nagora said the wantok system, favouritism and other stereotypes would bring good leadership down and should not in any way influence good leadership.
