Boino gets DQ, Wisil in second
FIVE Papua New Guinea athletes including leading female sprinter Toea Wisil and veteran men’s hurdler Mowen Boino competed in Canberra last Saturday in very cold conditions.
Wisil clocked 11.48 seconds in the 100m in placing second behind Melissa Breen (11.40).
Wisil’s aim was to get back into race mode and have a hard hit-out against Breen.
The pair will meet again this weekend in Townsville.
Boino clocked 52.52s but was disqualified for stepping on the line on his inside.
Eighteen-year-old Ephraim Lerkin clocked 54.23s in the 400m hurdles, whereas Nazmie Lee Marai ran a personal best 10.93s in the heats of the 100m, and won the 200m in 22.26.
With a compressed programme, Marai found the three races in the space of two hours quite a challenge, but he and Lerkin can now look forward to running in a more familiar climate in Townsville.
Quuensland-based Miriam Peni made the trip to Australian Capital Territory and clocked 12.69s and 25.85s respectively.
Wisil, Peni, Lerkin and Marai will all be in action again this weekend at an all-comers meet being held in conjunction with the North Queensland Student Games.
