Boino hits stride at championship

NINE PNG athletes are in Apia, Samoa, this week for the Oceania Regional Atheltics Championships.
The team contains a mixture of development squad members and senior athletes and the event is a modified version of the full Oceania Championships.
The competition got underway yesterday and hurdler Mowen Boino led the way with a top performance in the 400m hurdles, clocking 51.88 to win the event comfortably.
David Jessem achieved a personal best of 1.99m to finish third in the high jump.
Delhi Games representative Helen Philemon ran 12.66 in the 100m heats and improved to 12.58 in the final.
Venessa Waro ran a personal best of 12.68 after clocking 12.74 in the heats.
Kupun Wisil ran 10.96  in both the 100m heats and final.
Kupsy Bisamo finished second in the men’s 5000m behind an experienced New Caledonian but the hot conditions were not conducive to produce good times.
The highlight of day two for PNG was a top performance from Venesa Waro who ran 25.50 in the 200m.
Waro is preparing for the IAAF World Youth Championships which will be held in Lille, France, early next month.
Kevin Kapmatana ran 1:56.12in the 800m and Boino (49.17) qualified for today’s 400m final.
