MOWEN Boino ran superbly in the Sydney track classic last weekend, clocking his second fastest time in his 13-year career.
Competing in an international field with two Americans, a Briton,  New Zealander James Mortimer  and four Australian athletes, Boino again started conservatively to finish in a time of 50.88 which is the second best time that Mowen has ever run.
Justin Gaymon of the US came first in 49.77 and Australia’s Brendon Cole was second clocking 50.02.
Athletics PNG president Tony Green said it was a great run by the veteran.
“Sub-51 seconds for the hurdles is real quality running,” said Boino’s coach Matt Beckenham  from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
“Boino has been in Canberra for just over a month, training with Cole, who is currently Australia’s number one ranked hurdler and the only Australian who has a better time than Boino this year,” Green said.
Beckenham’s other charge, Lauren Boden, won the women’s race in an Olympic A  qualifying time of 55.45.
Toea Wisil maintained her recent form with another very good 100m to finish third again in 11.68.
In the 200m, Wisil was not able to hold her form right through to the finish and was placed fifth.
However her time of 23.85 into a headwind of -1.8m per second was another solid performance.
The PNG pair will now focus on the final meet of the Australian Tour which is the Qantas Melbourne Track Classic on March 2- 3.
“This meet will be huge as the tour meet will be held in conjunction with the IAAF World Challenge and form part of the selection trials for the Australian Olympic team,” Green said.
PNG’s 200m specialist and Pacific Games gold medalist from last year Nelson Stone will also be hoping to secure an invitation to run in Melbourne by clocking a good time this weekend in Brisbane.
