A SPIRITED Bomana 2 team put on a come-back performance to snatch the 2009 NCD Governor’s Cup rugby league challenge from defending champion Hohola Flies 6-4 in the Cup grand final yesterday at Hohola Oval.
The defending premiers had the title in the bag for the second consecutive year in the best part of the game but Bomana came back in last minute to score the converted try to snatch the victory.
The match was well-controlled by Morata number one referee Paul Wali who proved to be a bemobile cup material with his caution and interpretation of the rules during the Cup grand final.
The champions, Bomana 2, collected the NCD Governor’s Cup with K3,000 prize money while Hohola settled for the shield and K1,500.
The presentation of the bowls between June Valley/Tokarara did not take place while Bomana 1 defeated 8-Mile in the Plate finals.
Speakers including Masta Mark franchise owner Kelly Aiyok during the presentation commended the behaviour of the crowd during the grand final.
He said he was pleased with the behaviour of the supporters, especially from Hohola community who accepted the defeat.
Aiyok also commended the organisation headed by POM suburban rugby league president Billy Yaki for making the competition happen during the three-day Christmas tournament.
Hunslet Hawks and PNG international Michael Mark, who refereed the second semi finals between Bomana 2 and Heduru Brothers on Sunday, said during the presentation that he was pleased with the performance of the team.
He congratulated Bomana 2 for winning the NCD Governor’s Cup, meaning Bomana will host the 2010 NCD Cup at the Bomana Police College Oval.
Yaki said he was pleased that the NCD Governor’s Cup ended on a high note without any spectator violence.
“This is very good for rugby league and positive sign for the development of the game at the grassroot level, especially at the suburban level,” he said.
The awards winner during the tournament were: Player of the Series which went to Micky Belo of Morata Ducks while the grand final man-of-the-match went to Bomana 2 hooker Gibson Simon with K100.
Bowls had some problems while Bomana 1 won the plate against 8-Mile Mosquitoes.
Bomana 1 collected K750 while the loser collected K500.
