Bomana teams throw down gauntlet in Governor’s Cup

GOVERNOR’S Cup defending champions Bomana 2 have challenged all opposing teams in the NCD off-season league to try and dethrone them in this festive season’s competition.
And the Bomana sides received an early Christmas present when local  businessman William Onglo came to their aid in the annual  challenge this weekend.
The defending champions, Bomana Degmo’s 1 (bowl) and 2 (cup) will have new jumpers, courtesy of Onglo who is also president of Bomana Degmo club.   
The sponsorship was to the tune of K3,000 for the jumpers and an additional K2,000 along with additional funding for refreshments for the teams.
Onglo said he was proud to sponsor the teams because rugby league was part of his life and that he wanted to keep the youths out of trouble.
“Rugby league is part of me because I have been playing rugby since 1987,” he said.
“I am trying to keep the youths free from illegal activities such as marijuana and homebrew consumption,” he added.
Onglo added that he was keen in promoting rugby league and religious activities in the community, which are two factors that would groom young people to live a disciplined life.
Kerenga Bruce, team captain for Bomana Degmo 1, said he was happy that the team eventually secured a sponsor as in the past, they were playing without any sponsorship.
 “The boys are excited about the new jumpers and they promised to give their best in the, upcoming Governors Cup,” he said.
The club warned other teams that if they were serious about taking the cup, they should come with their best.
Bomana League president Alphonse Witnes said that though Bomana off-season league was one of the newest established leagues in NCD, it had proven to be a successfully managed league in Port Moresby.
He said though the Bomana off-season rugby league did not receive sponsorship from external sources, the league had somehow remained the best in NCD because of prudent management, commitment and dedication from the executives and the players.
