Book week celebrated in style

Tokarara Primary School celebrated the National Book Week in style with PNG’s first family of Authors.
After a week-long indoor activities which includes reading and literature writing.
The school was privileged to have PNG’s first family of Authors, who motivated the students to start writing at an early age and also assisted them in writing poems.
Senior teacher Jacqueline Obara said the outdoor celebrations included a display of poems, stories, songs, dance and the blending of words (phonics) and miming by Grade 3 students.
“The National Book Week activities will help the students to read more books and increase their reading capacity and to be informed on different things,’’ she said.
St. John’s Catholic School in Tokarara ended the National Book Week celebration with a book fair to highlight the importance of different books.
Head Teacher Martha Kaisapi said to coincide with the National Book Week’s theme, Read, Educate, Advance and Develop, a book fair was done by students who represented different books which included the manual, dictionary, diary, encyclopaedia, Bible, newspaper, text book, novel, comic and atlas.
She said the school dedicated an hour of everyday to reading in order to develop the students’ reading and writing skills.
“During the literacy week, more emphasis will be on students’ writing skills to help them develop in different writing genres.”
She said the Yareki family, through their book writing programme, would assist the students to develop their potential in writing.
Both schools were thankful to the Yareki family for being part of their National Book Week celebrations.
The Yarekis’s are the first PNG family of authors. National Book Week is celebrated annually from Aug 1-5.
