Boost for Air Services

 THE PNG Air Services Ltd will modernise and update the country’s air traffic management system and surveillance technology with support from the Australian government.
A jointly funded Australian aid project valued at US$12 million (K33 million) has been awarded to German-based company ComsoftGambh in Port Moresby to improve air safety.
PNGASL managing director and chief executive officer Captain Ted Pakii said the project would include :

• A new air traffic management system with associated new voice communication system, a three-dimensional 240-degree training simulator which would act as a disaster recovery system;
• surveillance facilities to improve situational awareness;
• enabling domestic airports of Madang, Mount Hagen, Goroka, Nadzab and Tokua to contribute to the country’s coverage and precise surveillance within PNG; and,
• Installing facilities to provide automated services between ground station and airborne equipment to enhance safety.

“The tender and procurement process, which commenced in 2012 and which has taken 16 months to complete, has enabled us to select the right contractor with the right products that meet our needs and that will deliver enhanced services,” Pakii said.
He said the project would facilitate specialised air traffic control staff training and development.
“Our focus is to build on safety, service and sustainability.
“Our commitment to the people of PNG as well as the aviation industry is to provide modern equipment and systems that contribute towards achieving our vision of becoming a world class air navigation provider,” Pakii said.
