A LOCAL level government president in Morobe is concerned about the increase in bootlegging operations.
Isaac Aaron, president of the Wafi LLG, in Menyamya district, is the minister responsible for liquor licensing in the province.
Aaron said beer was being sold like soft drinks on the streets of Lae.
“There are many small black markets,” he said.
“A lot of mothers want alcohol banned in the districts because it is fuelling a lot of alcohol-related problems.
“But some women have been operating beer markets and beer clubs saying it is their major income earner.
“This is very confusing and they have to sort themselves out.”
Isaac said bootlegging was common in many residential areas with illegal beer clubs and pubs.
“Resident owners selling beer should stop immediately. They must move their beer shop or club elsewhere.
“Do a good beer club, install a fridge and sell cold beer which people can buy and enjoy.”
He warned people selling beer illegally in settlements and residential areas to stop.
“There is a police operation coming up soon and those found breaking the law will be dealt with accordingly.
“I am giving a warning to those operating without proper licenses to come and obtain a license,” he said.
