Booze remains major cause of problems in Bulolo
The National, Wednesday March 26th, 2014
SINCE the ethnic clash last year between the Bubus and the Watuts in Bulolo, the Morobe governor and the provincial executive council imposed a three-month fighting zone and liquor ban.
The national government also pledged K20 million for police mobile squad operations and investigations, as well as the set-up of a peace and order working committee.
But nothing has eventuated.
The police mobile squads withdrew after three months, no arrests were made of instigators of the ethnic clash, no peace or resolution has been reached between the two warring parties and worst of all, the liquor ban has been lifted. The public now consume homebrew openly.
Law-abiding citizens are fed-up with the constant verbal and physical harassment and mayhem caused by drunk hooligans that rule this town.
We have the right and freedom to move around and associate with other people in our daily businesses without fear of being oppressed or intimidated.
The government and its relevant authorities must make sure we are able to exercise these rights.
I have lived here all my life and have witnessed several ethnic clashes in this town caused by drunkedness
Almost all the people in this town will agree with me that the deaths that have ignited and fuelled ethnic clashes here since 2010 were caused by people consuming beer, liquor and homebrew freely in public places.
Save our town, authorities.
