Bougainville counting similar to first past-the-post

THE referendum counting system will be similar to the first-past-the-post system and not the limited preferential voting (LPV) system, a member of the Bougainville Referendum Commission George Manu says.
This was his simplified version of what the people can expect in the counting process.
He said many people in Bougainville were questioning whether there would be a certain percentage declared for the options – independence or greater autonomy.
“At the moment there is no threshold,” Manu said.
“We will deliver the numbers. The chairman will return the writs with numbers of how many who voted for independence and how many who voted for greater autonomy.
“There is no percentage (like in LPV system).
“That is why turnout during polling is very important.
“It is not like the elections we stage 50+1. No.
“This is first-past-the-post.
“The BRC will only give the figure of those who voted for independence and those who voted for greater autonomy.
“That is the only result that will go back to the governor-general.”
