Bougainville secured their first win of the National Soccer League on Saturday, beating Eastern Stars 2-1 in a tight contest.
Both sides shared equal possession throughout the game but it was the combination of the Bougainville players that got them home.
Arniel Passam was the hero of the day for Bougainville, scoring in the 60th and 80th minute.
The only goal for the Eastern Stars came from Joshua Manniar in the 66th minute.
Although they had opportunities to equalise, the Bougainville defence — led by experienced defenders Abel Redenut and Philip Steven — kept them at bay.
The Stars, who lost 2-1 to Port Moresby United in the opening round, were disappointed not to come away with any points.
Bougainville coach David Passam described the win as a team effort.
“The players really gave their all in this game,” Passam said.
“We wanted to bounce back and that’s what we did.
“I think our performance was based on some good team work.
“But as the game was winding down, we got a little bit tired and nearly gave the game away.
“Last week, our defence was exposed but I think we tightened it up with all the players defending well.
“The Eastern Stars came out really strong as expected but again credit to the boys for defending very well.”
