National Capital District boxers are ready to win back their champions tag after receiving some useful tips from Australian = coach Peter Morrison.
Morrison, who works with Network Kokoda as team leader, was in the country on business but agreed to help NCD boxers with some tips.
NCD boxing coach Mark Keto said the two-hour session at Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Complex proved to be very handy for Team NCD boxers.
“Boxing is changing and what Morrison taught during the session is very important and it was a very helpful tip as my boxers prepare for the championships in Arawa,” he said. Team NCD will be sending 14 boxers including for women fighters — Laisani Soma, Flora Loga, Debbie Kaore and Raphaela Kaore.
“This is trial-and-error for boxers. The boxers throughout the country would be invited for the second session later this year,” he said.
Morrison said he was pleased to work with PNG boxers.
He said he came to know PNG boxing after arranging a charity boxing challenge in March for Network Kokoda in March.
“Some of the boxers, Charlie Keama, Thaddius Katoa and Beupu Noki stood out including female boxer Laisani Soma,” he said.
Network Kokoda was pleased to partner PNG boxing in taking part in the short session to help PNG boxers for international tournaments.
“We want to develop relationships with PNG boxing and allow their boxers to train in better conditions and give them much exposure in high level training environment,” he said.
Morrison said there are more talents here but they need exposure in high level training facilities to prepare them for big challenges.
He said he was also pleased with Laisana who performed well and had good sparring sessions before the tournament.
The more exposure the female boxers get, the more chances for them to participate along with the men boxers.
