THINK only once not twice is what keeps Nelson Kosipi going.
These are the words of his coach and professional boxer Kevin Baki from the Socay Club, in Hohola.
Nelson, known as “Nelcoh Bly”, grew up as a ‘rascol’, snatching bags, picking pockets, drinking ‘bucket’ and attacking innocent victims.
Life zigzagged out of control when his mother died in 2000.
“My mother was everything to me. I miss all her caring and loving presence,” Nelson said. “My mum used to tell me not get involved with the streets and to go to church.”
Nelson’s father died when Nelson was doing his preparatory education. He is the youngest of 10.
He did his Grade 10 at Gerehu High School in 2009.
With six years experience in boxing, the 23-year-old from Meiuaripi, Gulf, said he joined boxing as a respite after having gone through too much in life.
“Boxing has taught me lot of things inside and outside of the ring. It has taught me to respect and most of all, it has disciplined me,” he said.
“Now when I see these pickpockets trying to snatch bags, I chase away those rascols and protect the innocent.” Nelson said.
“I want to represent PNG one day and when I win my medals, I am going to dedicate it to my parents, especially to my mum who was so close to me.”
