A BOY, 13, died in a hit-and-run case in Wewak on Saturday, police said.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said Kelly Gawi, a student of Kaindi Primary School, was hit by an unidentified vehicle at Kaindi.
He said traffic accidents had increased recently and drivers and road users should be careful when driving, crossing or walking beside the road.
Supt Beli said after the boy died, youths blocked the road but police went in and removed the barriers on Sunday and warned them not to disrupt the public from having access to the road.
He said police were investigating the matter and has asked relatives and public to supply information about the vehicle to help their investigation.
“People are still consuming alcohol during weekends even though there is liquor ban in place and these are some of the contributing factors to most of the social issues in the province,” Supt Beli said.
“Youths and even adults are consuming homebrew.
“We must stop the sale of yeast in the province to minimise social issues.”
Supt Beli said the sale of yeast was one of the contributing factors to the problems.
He said police had been receiving reports of people fighting after consuming homebrew.
Supt Beli said most of the problems within Wewak town were caused by unemployed youths living in the settlements in the town.
