A juvenile was arrested and charged with one count of wilful murder in New Ireland last week following the death of a youth, police said.

Provincial police commander Philip Welia said the main offender stabbed the youth, Edward Murava, with a knife in the back after a fight erupted at the Rawal area in Kavieng town  early on Thursday.

“It was alleged that a group of youths between 18 and 20, including the youngest who is 14, were under the influence of alcohol and were having an argument regarding the State of Origin match.

“A fight eventually broke out. The suspect got a knife and stabbed Murava in the back.”

Welia said Murava died shortly after. It is a very sad thing to see such an act committed.

Parents should be responsible for their children rather letting them roam around during the night time.

“Seven suspects were arrested that morning, however six were cautioned and discharged and the juvenile is charged with wilful murder.”

Police are to address the community today regarding the matter and Welia is appealing to three suspects still at large to surrender to police.
