TEAM Western Highlands will take part in 11 sporting codes at the PNG Games in Kokopo despite financial problems that almost wrecked their chances.
General team manager Simon Kama said yesterday the financial hiccup had not stopped his management from sending their contingent to Kokopo.
Kama said the first batch of team members began travelling last Wednesday and the last batch arrived on Sunday.
He said they would take part in basketball, netball, softball, taekwondo, darts, kickboxing, cricket, boxing, athletics, golf and para sports events.
“Our team members have been hard at trainings and are all excited and looking forward to putting up a good challenge at the Games,” Kama said.
He said Team WHP were expected to do well in basketball as they had won the bronze medal in the 2007 games in Lae and took silver in the 2009 Games in Port Moresby.
“Our basketball players are all fired up to defend their silver and aim for gold which they lost to Team NCDC in the last Games,” Kama said.
He added that Team WHP also expected to pick up medals in para sports and taekwondo.
Meanwhile, Team Jiwaka and Team Hela will be participating in the PNG Games for the first time.
since the two provinces were accorded provincial status.
